Devi Protective Offense for Instructors
of Women's Self Defense
A 1-2 day course that focuses on how female students may be better served in the always predominantly male territory of martial arts.
As a guy, how comfortable are you in a spa? A mommy and me aerobics class? That's about the comfort level of many women in a martial arts class. And yet not only can women be a major source of income for your business, but you can be doing a good deed as well by teaching skills that translate to many areas of a woman's life.
What is the percentage of male to female students in your school? How much time do you spend thinking about what it must be like to be prey in a world of predators? Have you ever worn heels? Do you know what it feels like to make choices every day about whether you're going to feel attractive and leggy or hobble yourself?
How many women walk into your school and leave to never come back? Or come to one class only? Is it higher or lower than the number of men who do the same?
What is your connection to your female students? How would they say you come off? Super hero whose background is so hard core she could only dream of being you? Tough guy with a chip? Trying too hard to appear to understand what you haven't really studied? Groping in the dark? Poser? Or solid mentor with her best welfare in mind?
If your turnover of female students is high, you may not be covering the aspects of self defense that most concern women. Learn how to train successful students who love learning how to think like warriors.
If you're open to seeing the world in a different way. And you believe that the world women live in is a little different that your world. If you want to know more about it, give this workshop a try. If you are still collecting techniques to brag about, if your cup is full, if you already have all the answers, take another technique-heavy martial arts seminar by any number of grand masters out there and call it a day.
"Teja makes it personal, makes it real. [She] has created teaching that resonates"
~ Rory Miller, Author of Meditations on Violence and Facing Violence
What You Can Expect To Learn:
1. Learn to attract more women to your school. It's that simple. You want to make money so you can keep your business going. We all want women to be safe and self-sufficient. It's a win/win. But is your logo dark and masculine? Are your materials written with women in mind? Is your only connection to women one that involves messaging about fitness? Learn to create a safe and comfortable niche in your school for your female students.
2. Learn to determine which techniques will be most reliable for a woman against a larger, stronger attacker. Can you and do you put yourself in your students shoes to test your favorite techniques with their abilities and needs in mind?
Devi reworks physical self defense for women with an emphasis on the mental. As a new mom, I became acutely aware of the holes in my training. A woman up against multiple attackers, or with a child in tow, requires techniques with an insanely high likelyhood of success. The greater the difference in things like physical strength and leverage, the higher the stakes.
Women need to see things before they happen and they need aggressive tools for dealing with possibilities like rape.
"Size, strength, height and leverage all have a bearing on which physical techniques will work. A move that works for two people of roughly the same size doesn’t always translate when there’s a great contrast in physical attributes. You need a step ladder to reach a shelf, a painters ladder to reach the roof, but a ladder won’t get you to the moon." ~ Teja Van Wicklen
3. Learn how to cover more specific ground with special scenario training classes using props. Teach Moms to be family protectors when Husbands and boyfriends are away. What about single moms? Moms with young kids in tow? Moms with multiple kids of different ages? What about fighting with a baby in a sling or a moby wrap? Are you familiar with the different types of strollers?
4. Learn women-specific core strength training and many other tips so you can offer a better quality of life to your female students.
5. Learn to cover the mental aspects of violence when talking to a woman who has been through something you can't possibly imagine or a woman who doesn't want to go there. Learn what women need to know and how to impart knowledge without being scary or off-putting.
Cover all your bases and become a well-rounded instructor of women's self defense.
